Caspian Azeri sector not to freeze due to cold

The Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea will not freeze due to the deterioration of weather.

The statement came from acting director of National Meteorological Department of the Ecology and Natural Resources Ministry, Professor Rza Mahmudov, APA reports.

He said the northern part of the Caspian Sea mostly freezes in cold period of winter. The Middle and Southern Caspian do not almost freeze.

Abnormal freezing in the above-mentioned parts of the Caspian Sea was recorded in 1920 and 1953.

“Freezing was recorded in the Middle Caspian in 1920 in Gizilagaj bay. It killed more than 10 000 migratory birds there. Freezing was recorded in the north of the Caspian in 1953. It has not happened ever since,” he said.

Mahmudov said the observations on Azerbaijani coasts of the Caspian Sea show that the process will not reach the level of freezing.

“I have contacted with Russia and Astrakhan. Some parts of the coastal zones of Dagestan have been covered with 8-10 cm thick ice. This is connected with the abnormal cold weather. It does not happen every year. For the time being, such cases are excluded in the Middle Caspian and our zones,” he said.
