Llittoral states need to work to preserve Caspian Sea for future generations
Baku hosts the 16th Session of the Committee on Hydrometeorology and Pollution Monitoring of the Caspian Sea.
Speaking at the event, Deputy Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan Rauf Hajiyev read out a letter of greetings on behalf of Minister Huseyn Bagirov addressed to the session participants.
In his message the minister noted the uniqueness of the Caspian Sea, and expressed confidence that the Caspian states will continue to work together to implement activities to protect this unique water reservoir.
"Due to the fact that the Caspian Sea has large reserves of hydrocarbons, and also rich flora and fauna, it attracted the attention of local and foreign businesses, which ultimately affected its pollution. Azerbaijan, on its part, continues to work towards the protection and preservation of this unique body of water. The ecological status of the Caspian Sea is under the constant attention of the government.
We have developed comprehensive plans to address the environmental problems, carrying out environmental protection measures in order to neutralize or eliminate discharges into the sea. Work continues to clean up the sea. In particular, we are cleaning the sea of sunken ships and semi-sunken ships, old piers, docks, etc is carried out near the Baku bay and around Chilov island.
In addition, 16 local filters were set in 2007-2009 and their installation continues. Modern treatment facilities have been launched in order to purify municipal water and sewage near the Chilov and Pirallahi island, as well as the Oil Rocks. It is the task of the Caspian countries to protect the pond from solution and to preserve its rich biodiversity for future generations', said Bagirov.
